The technology behind Grok Imagine Video 1.5 Lite
How the model works, based on public documentation and sourced evidence.
Grok Imagine Video 1.5 Lite is xAI's lower-priced tier of its Video 1.5 model, released in October 2026 and described by OpenRouter as distilled from Video 1.5: a smaller model trained to imitate the larger one so it runs faster and costs less. xAI's video overview lists it for text to video and image to video only, with clips from 1 to 15 seconds at 480p, 720p or a 1080p upscaled from 720p, generated audio with lip-synced speech, and the recommendation to use it for simple videos and the full Video 1.5 for references, voices, pinned frames or native 1080p.
Two details shape what comes out. The 1080p tier is produced by rendering at 720p and enlarging the result, so the frame is 1080p in size but its detail comes from a 720p pass, which shows in fine textures, small text and tight crops. And on xAI's published price list Lite costs $0.02, $0.03 and $0.14 per second at 480p, 720p and 1080p, against $0.08, $0.14 and $0.25 for Video 1.5.
Artificial Analysis placed it 17th on its text to video board with an Elo of 999, seven places below Video 1.5 (1,060) and two above Google's Veo 3.1 (968). AlphaSignal's write-up of the launch results notes that Lite trails the full model in nine of ten capability groups, ties it on physics, comes closest in multi-scene narrative, lighting and text rendering, and falls furthest behind in dialogue with lip sync and in human anatomy.
On Vidney both modes are open, every whole second from 1 to 15 at 480p, 720p or the 1080p upscaled from 720p, with sound always on. The upscaled 1080p costs more here than the native 1080p of Video 1.5, so for 1080p Video 1.5 is the better buy. Text to video takes 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 3:2 or 2:3; image to video keeps the shape of the starting image. In our paired test runs on October 19, 2026 at 480p and six seconds, Lite finished first in five of seven pairs, with a median of about 32 seconds against about 43 for Video 1.5. In the same runs Video 1.5 kept a face from the starting photo closer to the original when the camera moved in. Reference images, an end frame and keyframes are not offered because Lite does not take them.
